How will tablets impact the PC market in the medium- and long-term?

Predicting what will happen in the PC market 10 years out is a fool's errand, so to speak. Ironically, about 10 years ago folks were all excited about this new thing called a tablet PC. Yes, the old one that never really did much. Nobody then could have envisioned the cloud. 10 years is forever in this business.

In the short-run (2-3 years) the impact will be huge. People who choose to buy a tablet will use it for much of their casual surfing, updating Facebook, anything that does not need a full-blown keyboard. As a result, their "computer budget" will likely not be ready to spring for a new full computer as often. Analysts today say they are already seeing hints of this at home, and offices will also start using tablets to virtually run software on their desktop while on the road. Tablets will soon be just one more form factor, perhaps the most popular for everyday use. All we need now is speech input.
